Heavy Equipment- 5 Hidden Costs You Should Know About Before You Buy!
Technology --
The technology used in heavy equipment is far beyond anything we have seen in the past and the costs to hire someone to operate a particular piece of equipment is skyrocketing. The national average for a heavy equipment operator is in the $60,000 range.
Maintenance --
Powerful heavy equipment is useless if there is no around to fix it. Working with heavy equipment is no easy task. If your company has purchased some type of machinery that has no maintenance agreement included, one major repair jobsite can wipe out the profit you had built into the project.
Theft --
Every year, millions of dollars worth of heavy equipment is stolen from the job site. Heavy equipment is tempting for thieves. The stolen heavy equipment is either parted out or taken to another area where it is sold or used by another business.
Underutilization --
When heavy equipment is underutilized your costs of acquisition skyrocket and your loss in value is occurring unnecessarily. Heavy equipment is not a cheap undertaking and you should find ways to maximize the value of your machinery. One thing to consider is renting or leasing your equipment when it is idle.
Worker injury --
Construction equipment is inherently dangerous to work around, especially for employees on foot. While heavy equipment is being operated, potentially dangerous materials may be present, electric circuits may be live, flammable or noxious liquids or gases and other potential dangers will exist. How are you prepared for these events should one occur? Remember: The best policy around heavy equipment is to take no chances.
As you see there are other things you need to consider as your fleet of heavy construction equipment grows and there are no easy answers. Talk to others in your area about how they manage their inventory and how they maintain, operate, move, and utilize their equipment.

Heavy Machinery Material Handling
The equipment used for handling heavy machinery varies, depending upon the location. Industrial trucks and tractors are used to handle heavy machinery and move material around warehouses, storage yards, factories, or construction sites. A typical industrial truck, often called a forklift, uses a hydraulic lifting mechanism and forks to move large and heavy objects. Industrial tractors are also available to pull trailers loaded with material, goods, or equipment within factories and warehouses or around outdoor storage areas.
Ship loading and unloading equipment, conveyors and hoists are used at docks. Specialized material-handling equipment such as shipping tank unloading equipment is also used in docks, to gauge or sample shipping tanks and test them for leaks.
Other heavy machinery handling equipment includes conveyors and mine cars that are widely used in mines.
Prior to taking a decision about the material handling equipment to be used, it is important to take into account the general characteristics of the equipment. One should then attempt to determine which equipment is best suited for the required heavy machinery to be handled.
It is advisable to consult the dealers before purchasing or leasing such expensive equipment. Several companies provide material handling solutions for heavy machinery through their websites. Online Business to Business (B2B) platforms that allow buyers to interact with several manufacturers and equipment leasing companies are an excellent option to find the best prices for the purchase or leasing of heavy machinery material handling equipment.

The system is available from the factory or for field installation.
The popular self-leveling option will continue to be offered. It allows the operator to keep the work tool or load level while raising the lift arms. Caterpillar ToughGuard™ hoses are used for all lift, tilt and auxiliary circuits. They are approximately 20 times more resistant to abrasion than standard hoses and provide improved machine reliability.
Longer Oil Change IntervalImproved reliability and availability will result from increased oil sump capacity on the six machines with the 3024C engine. An additional 1.9 quarts of oil moves the oil change interval to 500 hours and reduces maintenance time.
Multi Terrain Loader ImprovementsUndercarriage features on the 247B2 and 257B2 multi terrain loaders are designed to maximize production while reducing owning and operating costs. The two machines feature a 10 percent improvement in low-speed drawbar pull. A single-level suspension undercarriage provides low ground pressure, stability, high traction and fast travel. Idlers and bogie wheels feature heavy-duty metal face seals and tapered roller bearings to add reliability, durability and protection.
Components, including idlers and bogie wheels, shafts and standard steel rear idlers, can be replaced without removing the entire track assembly. In addition, track removal is not necessary to replace most undercarriage components and the time required to replace the track has been greatly reduced. A new, easy-to-use track tensioning system permits quick and easier track adjustment. New planetary gear reduction drive motors eliminate the need for the outboard bearings on previous undercarriages and Heavy Duty Dual Face (HDDF) seals are used on all idlers and bogie wheels.

The truck that does it all
The SBS15-20N series not only stacks heavy loads at heights up to 6.5 metres but works in narrower aisles than a reach truck and transports goods efficiently over long distances.
There are three models to choose from, each offering high residual capacities: the 1.5 tonne SBS15N; the 1.5 tonne initial lift model SBS15NI, which allows increased ground clearance for use on ramps; and the 2.0 tonne SBS20N, for use with heavier loads and higher racking.
In designing the SBSN, Mitsubishi has aimed for a combination of power, precision, comfort and durability.
The latest AC drive technology ensures high drive speeds and acceleration, even when loaded – as well as smooth, quiet, controlled operation, extended shift lengths and lower maintenance requirements. With a robust chassis and mast, low-maintenance components, rapid access for checks, and a long service interval, Mitsubishi expects these trucks to have a long and highly productive life with minimal downtime.
For operators there is a comfortable, full-suspension, fully adjustable seat, an adjustable armrest and ergonomically designed controls. All hydraulic movements are smooth and jolt-free, while 360-degree, electronic, 'fly-by-wire', progressive steering means that manoeuvring is precise, effortless and controlled – whatever the speed.
An automatic, stepless speed reduction system constantly monitors lift height and steering angle – adjusting speed whenever necessary. For even greater versatility, the truck's programmable controller can be used to set acceleration, travel speed, lift speed and braking parameters at levels appropriate to each operator.
The SBSN series comes with an impressive specification as standard and a range of useful optional features. For example, the side stabilisers that are standard with triplex masts can be fitted as an option on duplex. Customers can also choose a system that makes sure the side stabilisers are deployed when the forks are lifted to 2.5 metres or higher.
Welcoming the SBSN, Terry Foreman, General Manager of Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks UK, says: "The quality of these new stackers is exactly what you'd expect from a company with the reputation and massive resources of Mitsubishi. But excellent trucks will only maximise a customer's productivity if they are backed up by excellent support on the ground. That's where our network of friendly local dealers has something very special to offer. Whether you're looking for a 'do-anything' truck like the SBSN or a more specialised machine, there's a Mitsubishi dealer near you who is ready, willing and fully equipped to deliver the trucks and the service you need."

These are the first models to be offered by Hyundai with AC motors, providing superior control, smoother driving, improved energy efficiency, all aided by the excellent inherent braking and regeneration capacity of the drive system.
There are also significant performance benefits from the AC drive system, with improved traction, gradability (up to nearly 30%), and controllability, both on the ramp and during braking, provided by the smooth-working retardation characteristics of the AC drive motors. This enhances stability, operator confidence and consequent overall working efficiency.
The drive system utilises efficient Sauer-Danfoss drive motors (dual-drive on all models) and hydraulics with Zapi electronic controllers. The robust new, direct-drive AC motors are sealed units which are cleaner and quieter (than DC motors), and make a significant contribution to reduced operating and maintenance costs: there are no brushes or commutators, providing longer life and less servicing. The brakes too are maintenance-free, long-life wet-disc brakes.
A feature of the electronic control system is that different performance modes (High, Normal, Economy or Turtle) and speed limits can be pre-selected, and any system errors are displayed directly on the dashboard for self-diagnosis (making laptop analysis for simple faults unnecessary - but possible). There is also a high degree of component commonality between all the models.
Design
The overall design features new smooth, rounded lines to complete their modern appearance, and close attention in the design has been given to operator comfort: with easy, lower step-in, improved seating position and visibility.
They also incorporate many operational performance benefits. The four-wheel machines have a particularly small turning radius (1.7-1.78m), comparable even to that of the highly-manoeuvrable three-wheel machines (with 1.57-1.69m). And low overall dimensions (1.1m wide and under 2m high) make these models the most compact in their class.
Other detail improvements include: J-section mast (replacing previous I-section) for reduced front overhang, increase load capacity and enhanced stability, and other simple yet important small touches such as better right-hand starter key position, bigger grab handles and lighter ratchet park brake lever.
These trucks have been conceived essentially for high-production indoor applications, so high-intensity utilisation between battery re-charge is possible, ensuring full working potential for entire shifts.
Statement
"The efficient new models bring a new dimension to the expanding Hyundai range," explains Dirk Luyten, Hyundai's European Sales Manager (Lift-trucks). "with an increasing emphasis on operator pleasure, which is the combination of precision, comfort and reliability. Hyundai has been able to establish its brand thanks to its modern philosophy refusing to blindly « follow » contemporary tendencies for the use of electronics. This Hyundai philosophy is the markets true innovation: electronics have to serve man, not the other way around."
Availability
These new AC-powered Dash-7 models will be launched in Europe at Manutention, Paris Nord Villepinte (11-14 March 08), Hall 6 - Stand E 084, and will be available for delivery from the first quarter of 2008. More additions to Hyundai's "Dash-7" range are expected to follow later this year.
New Training Centre
With a view to improving product knowledge and technical support, Hyundai has recently opened a new training centre at Geel, to provide product and technical training for dealers and customers, as well as certified operator training courses. The centre is expected to accommodate some 300 trainees during the year, coming from Hyundai's 115-strong Europe-wide dealer network and its customers.
Impressive growth record
As an indication of Hyundai's continued rapid growth and market acceptance in Europe, HHIE closed 2007 with a turnover of approximately 285 million Euros, on the sale of some 4800 machines (construction and fork-lifts combined). In 2003, this figure was 89 million Euros, representing an increase in turnover of 220% in just four years. The high point was 2006 when a turnover increase of over 40% was recorde

Mini-sized compact skid steer loader from Kanga Loaders
Recognised as a small and user-friendly mini loader, the Kanga Kid has an overall track/wheel width of 800mm (which can fit through the average doorway of a house) and an overall height 1,210 mm.
Enhancing its performance is a lengthy list of operating features as well as an array of purpose designed attachments for a multitude of tasks.
The series 2 Loader adheres to government guidelines on OH&S which incorporates Hand Arm Vibration standards, as well as internationally recognised risk management studies and procedures.
Available in heavy-duty wheels or tracks, the Kanga Kid has a powerful Vee Twin 16 hp Honda engine, simple and quick change of attachments that can be done in seconds, a full-flow auxiliary hydraulic power outlet, a large operator platform, soft touch controls for operator ergonomics as well as optional back protection bars.
Attachments include a standard bucket, 4-in-1 bucket, manure bucket, mulch bucket, rubble bucket, grapple bucket, bucket broom, power head, mixer bowl, augers, auger extensions, and a trencher.
For lawn and garden care applications, a lawn aerator, turf cutter, carry-all leveller, hydraulic angle blade, rotary tiller and wood chipper are available.
Multi tools include a tow hitch and ripper/hook, while specialised equipment include a rock breaker and vinyl stripper.
A self levelling bucket removes the risk of the operator tipping the load over himself or herself or over the machine. This reduces cycle times, and makes for safe and easy operation by any inexperienced operator.
Generous bucket rollback allows easy filling and transportation without load spillage, with the arms fully lowered providing a lower centre of gravity.
A correctly sized bucket ensures that the load is limited to its rating, and the machine balance is good in design that it enables the loader to remain balanced either fully loaded or when the bucket is removed.
Other main safety features include a safety release valve that prevents unsafe overloading of its hydraulic systems, a rupture-proof fuel tank made of heavy gauge steel, and non-slip perforated operator platform that is free from hot engine obstruction, while soft touch controls makes it simple and easy to operate the control panel.
The Kanga Kid has long-life linkable pins, a self levelling arm, enclosed hydraulic wheel motors, a vee twin petrol engine and optional heavy-duty Donaldson air cleaner.
